Blog 25-Mirror Time

Hmm. When I graduated High School, I would never had thought that I would be a student at LaGuardia Community College, much less in a community college either. But you know what life has a crazy way of taking its own turns. I remember the day I registered they were talking about “a cluster class”. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I just took a class that was close to sociology which is my intended major. well looking back on my original plans has taught me not to go by them always and make decisions as I go along. The cluster classes have been a interesting experience as well as a learning experience as well.
Once I started the cluster classes, I knew that I had new experiences in store for me. In my Media and Society class (the reason I took this cluster) I learned a lot of things that basically opened my eyes to how the world really is, and that is what I wanted so my expectations for that class was fulfilled. Louis Lucca was a really cool professor and the pace of his class and the things we spoke about made my Monday mornings something to look forward to. And I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I HATE MONDAYS. I have never had so much fun talking about controversial topics in my life. and the students in my class made it a lot more intriguing as well, because of the different opinions people had. I mean there were some quiet ones but my classmates that did speak, made it worth while.
Of course English 101.103 was the main class in which I poured my thoughts out in, everyday or so. That was like my home class. I spent most of my time there. did most of my work there whether it was actually for Eng 101.103 or if it was for Media and Society or for American Film. Dr. Smith… lets just say he’s very cool, in a Matrix sort of way… Just kidding. But yes, I have never watched The Matrix before this class and by talking and writing about it in countless discussions and essays I don’t think I want to see it again. (sorry Dr. Smith). But in all seriousness I enjoyed analyzing the Matrix and other movies that we watched. I always think that things are not just what they seem so being able to dig deep into the Matrix, the Truman Show and other movies of the same type has strengthen my ability to do just that.
Professor Rhuben, and American film. I didn’t think that I would make it through 100 years of film. surprisingly I did. and I it wasn’t that bad. I have learned a lot about film, where certain genres came from and how each aspect of a movie is thought out very specifically to convey purpose. I like that I was able to learn all of that and then be able to use those techniques and show a movie (in that light) myself. Aside from learning movie related things I have learned to appreciate directors a lot more than I ever thought about before. They are very significant and I am able to see that now. Thanks American Film.
LIB 110 was fun as well going on field trips in order to complete assignments. Who can argue with that? I liked my 1st semester in LaGuardia and I looked forward to having other great professors in the near future. Looking back there is nothing that I regret and all I can do is hope for the best to come.

“Penis Envy” My A--
The theory of “penis envy” states that a female going through the sexual development stage realizes then begins to envy a man because he has a penis. Woman would then want to have a penis because it represents “power”. First off that was such a “male” thing to say, coming for a man himself Sigmund Freud. I think that doesn’t make any sense. A woman is a lot more powerful than a man who is only powerful on the outside. It would be just like a man to think so simply as a woman wanting a penis for power when in fact woman are more powerful, by controlling the mind.( I am speaking very generally here, there are always exceptions to generalities) There are a lot of females in movies that represent this “power over the mind” motif. And men are just afraid to lose their macho, by admitting they are a lot more submissive to woman then they would like to be. In the movie The Matrix Trinity, is parallel to Allegra Geller in eXistenz, who is parallel to Luz Martinez in The Sleep Dealer. These women all played major superiority roles against the men that they encountered, using mental and sexual stimulation to “capture” (in a sense) the male figure.
In The Matrix Trinity was told that she would fall in love with “The One”. And she was not about to let that vision die when Neo was on the brink of death. Trinity show her superiority when Neo laid in the chair dying and her very words was that she was suppose to fall in love with him and she was now falling for him. While in a sense Trinity took the submissive role, Neo fell into the metal trap of what she said and pulled himself out of the grave. As the only real significant woman in the movie she was able to role with “the big dogs” while still maintaining a part of femininity to be liked. She was very powerful in that she was an excellent program reader that she ever taught Neo a few things. Mind you Trinity did all of this without the necessity of a penis. Once the mind is captured nothing else really matters.
I’d rather be a female because I rather think with one head instead of two. The “penis” alters a guy’s judgment and therefore making them submissive. Males’ base their interest on visuals and what is on the surface. The outcome of having a penis (a sexual organ) as their “second brain” doesn’t really make them powerful now does it? Someone or something that is “powerful” tends to be untouchable or not easily accessible. If a guy walks outside and asked 10 girls to sleep with him, what would be the odds of him getting at least one? Whereas if a woman did that the outcome would probably be a lot greater. I’d say a woman has more pull, therefore possess more power.
In the movie eXistenz Allegra Geller was a top game creator of the world (a pretty powerful position to obtain) who was basically on the run because she would get assassinated if she did otherwise. A trainee Ted was assigned as her body guard and she was basically talking him into everything. She was the one who took him to get a pod and made him play her game. Since her game pod was damaged she used him along the way to play the game for her. There was a hot and steamy sex scene in the movie that shows the fatal attraction between the two. Allegra was a lot smarter than Ted who seemed to be conspicuously weary of every move they made. I feel as if Allegra used her sexual appeal and smarts to get to the task at hand.
In the independent film The Sleep Dealers, the main woman Luz Martinez welcomed a lonely Mexican Guy into the city, as he was in his search for nodes. He noticed that she had nodes on the bus ride into town and once she linked into the system she ended up finding him again. A symbolic representation of simple-mindedness in males was when Memo went to look for nodes on his own. He met a guy on the street that talked a good game as far as installing nodes for a cheap price, in the end he got mugged and beat up. By doing what sounded good on the surfaced caused him harm. By Luz finding him in the city the next day, she was the one that installed his nodes; the very reason he left Mexico and came to the city. She basically had the experience and power to do so. A love connection was also declared by her.
In all of these movies all the significant woman are much more powerful than the man they are parallel to. They are dominant in the role of mind play; they don’t need muscles, big guns, flashy cars, a penis and all the other exterior parts to show that they are powerful. Just like in the wild, a male peacock has the pretty feathers, because they need an exterior attraction for a female to even consider them. In woman, all power implements are internal; sexual organs, strengths, mentality and intellect, things you cannot see on the surface and are not hat easily accessible there for making us more powerful, than muscles, facial hair and more important(to a guy obviously) a penis. If you took away a guy’s penis, what would be left of him? Where would his power be? Trinity, Allegra Geller, and Luz Martinez serve as great models for powerful woman.

blog-22-eXistenz

I must say, in watching the movie eXistenz I have to completely disagree with "Penetrating Keanu". In the article it was claimed that “the matrix” was a infantile version of eXistenz, and that it was the inside of what males really and truly think about. If anything eXistenz is just that, The fantasy inside a guys mind. the movie dealt with so much scatology that I couldn’t bare it much. the way the author of “penetration Keanu” feels about the action in the matrix is the way I feel about the use of bodily fluids in eXistenz, All the things a guy could ask for is in this movie. From video games, killing, to sexual innuendos all the way to the actual act of sex. the matrix on the other hand was a lot more subtle along with being a lot more realistic. ( as ironic as that may sound)
from the opening scene with a gun made of bones that shot human teeth to the weird micro chip they had to squeeze into their backs. Every moment of the movie was parallel to the life of a little boy to a grown man,

blog23- matrix and marx

The two authors of chapter 18 are basically saying that the life of the Matrix is parallel to that of the Marxist beliefs. basically what they are saying is that Karl Marx stated that in capitalism people do not realized their realationship between work and and that capital in which they produce. this is because they are made to beleive that they are workin at their own will, and stripped from the realities of what "labor" really is. this is realated to the matrix in the sense that the "copper tops" are dependent of the system and that are unable to break free. but the matrix really is parallel to marxism because the people living in it are unaware that they are, which keeps them blind to the fact that they are in fact fueling the system with their labor. GENIEUS!

blog 20-Penitrating The Movies.

Freeland made the claim that the Matrix is a lot more infantile than eXistenz because it was overly glorified and to deeply looked at in terms of philosophy. She basically felt as if the action that partook in the movie “ The Matrix” was what made it better than the movie “eXistenz” and that “the Matrix” is a conjured up version of a guy’s fantasy. She uses a lot of evidences referring to scatology. The exchange in bodily fluids and other fluids throughout the movie were evidences that she used to prove her point. I highly disagree with her claim because I feel as if she was being bias. I feel that she didn’t give any credit where credit was due. Like that movie was really good in the fact that it had some parallels in very important parts of philosophy but she wasn’t willing to give credit to that instead she said it was only considered good based on the action.

blog 18 brainstorming on the final

wait so i had the funniest idea for a final, and im thinking if i should use it. Well the concept is not funny but the material would be. Basically i was gonna do framing and perception, and deviance (since im a sociologist @ heart). i was going to do framing on racism. how racism is only okay if it is ligitimzed and basically if it is funny. so i was going to gather a lot of info especially from youtube on racist jokes and stuff. i want to make a funny video and present it in a way where i dont have to really say much about the topic, but so the veiwers can draw that conclusion for themselves. that's all i have for now. im not even sure if i am going to stick with idea.

Blog 16- Matrixxxxxx Possibilty=) draft1

I believe that we live in the matrix, and in this essay I will explain why I disagree with David Nixon’ claim, that we do not live in the matrix. In the book The Matrix and Philosophy, Nixon goes on to say that in order for things to be knowledge it must be justified. I believe that is untrue because in order for something to become knowledge it has to derive from a belief. There are false beliefs as well as true beliefs. For example Nixon says “you might believe that the moon is a hollowed –out enclave where moon goblins live…” it is possible that there are goblins living in the moon, but there are thousands of people that could believe that’s not true, as well as thousands of people who do. But like I said before if there are false beliefs and true beliefs how can knowledge be made, if none of these people have actually been to the moon to structure these beliefs. I think that I something is derived from an opinion or a belief then it cannot be true. Everything we know as people are based on man-made ideologies. The only reason we know that the color blue is blue is because at some point of another someone told us that. For all we know blue can possibly not be a color at all. Nixon also made a claim that the truth cannot exist without falsehood and if that is so that furthers my opinion that of us living in the matrix. Truth is only based on the ideologies of the society in which one lives. Things that are okay in this country may not be so in another, so what does that say about truth? In America it is true that woman can show their legs, arms and other parts of their bodies during the summer, in Muslim cultures it is true that woman can not show any part of their bodies no matter what weather it is. In other countries it is true that men can have multiple wives at one time and in America it is true that a man can only have one wife at a time. And I can go on and on with those types of examples. I don’t think we live in the type of “matrix” that our bodies are submerged in a tank of pink goo, but I think we are in a matrix that has submerged our minds. Yes you can question everything in life, because if you didn’t there would nothing to live by, which brings me to Nixon’ possible/probable claim. Anything in life is possible which means it can or cannot happen. Probability on the other hand is the likelihood of these things happening. I do believe that probability plays a large role in things that are known as true beliefs; but back you my first argument you cannot base knowledge off of a belief. The main thing I can compare this matrix to is the string theory in physics. It’s like another life that can be going on at the same time that something else is going on, but you don’t really have the capability of knowing. String theory is parallel to saying that justified beliefs are truths.
At one point I thought there was a difference between reality and truth, but I’ve realized that they are the same thing. Nothing can be proven based on what someone has told you, and ultimately MADE you believe. Our minds are not seeing life plainly for what is it, because our thoughts were altered. We see trees as trees; grass as grass and the sky and the sky simply because we were once told that’s what those things are. By learning it alters your own state of thought and value of things. The matrix has been around longer than we thing and we are so “deep into the rabbit hole” that there is no turning back!

Blog 15- Rough draft research

Jasmine Heyward

1996: two students, a teacher killed by a 14 year old boy in Moses Lake Wash, 1998: four students and one teacher killed along with 10 wounded at a Middle school in Arkansas by an 11 and 13 year old, 2000: A six year old girl shot by a six year old boy at Buell Elementary, 2005: a 16 year old killed his grandfather, a security guard, teacher and five students followed by himself in Red Lake Minn., and the list goes on (“Timeline of World School Shootings”). Violent acts in kids as young as six years old have been taking place in different parts of the world. I feel as if television has a partial contribution to the spike in violence in the United States. But I absolutely disagree with that being the sole reason for the violence in children. Violent acts in general have taken place as far back as the Bible. The jealousy of “favoritism” from God caused Cain; a farmer, to kill his brother Able; a Shepherd, because Able’s sacrifice was liked more (by God) than Cain’s sacrifice. Violence occur all the time, only do the major situations get paid attention to. I think that there are numerous factors in life that influence violence, television just promotes it, making it prevalent to children. The epidemic in which violence grows is based on the lack of parenting and control they have over their children.
Violence is the act of causing pain to another person as well as to one’s self, and it doesn’t have to always be physical. It can be verbal and emotional. Violence also can come in different forms too, ranging anywhere from isolation of groups, to assaults, and the major one bullying. The question still remains: is television; not only violent TV, the source of all violence in children? I think not. Violence can start out in people very young and if it is failed to be addressed, can transform into something rather fatal and in turn led to escalading violent acts, such as these events in 1996-2005. I have never known a cartoon or any “family show” for that matter that gives ideas to kill your mother or teachers classmates or yourself, at school, and if you can think of a show, by all means enlighten me. On April 1st 2010 in Waycross, Georgia a group of 3rd graders brought weapons to school in hopes of stabbing a teacher who penalized a child prior to this incident. These eight and nine year old brought, duct tape, steel handcuffs, and even a steak knife, to school. The major thing is my mind is where are these children’s parents? These are not teenagers who are in a point in their life where they rebel and don’t tell their parents anything; but these are young children bringing these types of weapons to school. Shouldn’t these types of things be put up from children as well as being explained as off limit items? It is the parent’s job to step in and regulate certain situations; this being one of them. These were not homemade weapons but things you find around the house. I’m not even sure I knew what duct tape was at the age of eight or nine years old.
In an article on kidshealth.org titled “How TV affects your Child” made a good point that “violent” shows on television watched by little kids doesn’t make them violent but in actuality it makes them fear the world. This is true because as a young child they are not able to distinguish real acts from fake acts. So when a child, the age of eight or nine comes to school with weapons I can only wonder if the parent instilled certain morals, rules and discipline in these children. The article also pointed out the fact that TV is not permanently display in the brains of people nor permanently projected on the walls of people’s homes. Parents have a choice. They are different ways to keep kids out of TV’s and into other things a lot more productive. Whether or not TV promotes violence, it ultimately revert backs to the parent. In Cleveland, Ohio a 14 year old shot two students and two teachers before killing his-self. What television shows really influences this type of behavior in children? As I said before there for different forms of violence but we are not talking about name calling or bullying people during recess. We are talking about full blown, straight to the point shootings, in various states and even countries; including, but not limited to Germany and Argentina.
A television show can present to a child how to hold or maybe even fire a gun but a television definitely cannot put a gun in the palm of their hands. In an article by Brenda Coleman entitled “Studies on the Influence of Media Violence on Children” presents a problem with the research stating that TV influences children. The flaw is basically saying that people are using television as a scapegoat rather than focusing on the task at hand. 10 years after television was introduced to North America as well as South Africa is when crime rates spiked. There are other countries that have very violent shows and their crime rates are tremendously lower. A country replicating that would be Japan. Violence was around way before television was. So no, I do not believe TV influences violence. What would be the scapegoat in situations where acts of violence. Then who would be to blame?
Think about all the mediums out there for Children and teens to absorb data. There is Television, Internet, and music. Ding ding ding!!!!! We have a winner. Music is a highly used medium in youth today. There are all types of portable devices that allow music to be everywhere adolescence are. From hip hop music, talking about: guns, drugs, money and girls, to heavy metal sending out diabolical messages. This medium; music, leaves room for absorption of messages pretty easily. For example in hip hop’s own Snoop Dogg, lyrics in the song “Drop it like it’s hot” he raps “you gotta gun, so you wanna pop that, AK47 now n---- stop that”. This line is basically talking about guns and using them. Part of the reason why adolescence replicate these violence acts is not because they like the actual violence but they look up to the people performing the violence. If someone liked Snoop Dogg in this case, they probably would want to immolate his actions, based on the feelings he/she has for him. Same goes with police officers beating on people, if a kid wants to become a police officer “when he grows up” the fact that a humane figure is doing that, puts it in a more glorified light. And as we spoke before children cannot distinguish fiction versus non-fiction. But back to music. In genres like heavy metal, they send out just as much demonic and violent messages. In a song titled “I kill children” by Dead Kennedy they say, “I kill children I love to see them die, I kill children to make their mother’s cry.” This line is depicting some very violent ideas. And these are just two examples, one from only two genres of music, so just imagine how many more songs out there influence violent behavior. Instead of imagining I’ll walk you through a couple of hip hop songs that evoke violent behavior. A song entitled “Violence” by Cam’ron and ODB, states “I put a gun to you girl, that’s how I f--- her…I put a gun to your brain, push you in front of a train.” Ask around to find out how many people like Cam’ron or even ODB and admire the music that these people make. Music is a very powerful medium. Lets continue on to the song “Pray for Death” by Blessed Death A role model is a very important job because in the case of these young kids having access to these types of things, their role vicariously plays out in adolescences. If parents insist on allowing forms of media raise their children then the least these parents can do is make sure children have the right role models.
Basically I am arguing against the “Cable Guy” affect (not that, that is a real affect.) Jim Carey played “The Cable Guy” and basically he was placed in front of television as a child, and grew up imitating the things he saw on those shows as a kid, in his adult life. I am arguing against that because everyone has a filter and a perspective of certain things. This statement pertains to older kids, such as teens. The same way you can make the choice of what foods not to like the choice can be made not to perform violent acts. In Finland in 2007 an 18 year old boy shot and killed five boys, two girls, and a principal, prior to killing himself. Also in Finland in 2008 20 year old killed nine students and himself. These adolescences know right from wrong and still look what the outcome of that is. Television does not have that much power, to influence numerous groups of children and in this case teens, to go on what looks to be killing sprees.

In this essay I will prove how lighting (dark and light), along with special effects convey all themes associated with good and evil, as well innocence and deviance. As soon as the movie started one of the major special effects that I noticed was the super imposition/ mirror image of the trains colliding. Right at that point that special effect tells you that two storylines; the way of life of the city woman versus the way of life of the country woman were going to come together and in this case good and evil. The first character introduced in Sunrise: A song of Two Humans was the City woman. The effects of lighting as well as lighting in other aspects (dark and light) created the image of her being “evil”. She had dark messy hair that she parted down the middle before she left for a night out, and the night that she was going to get the husband, she picked up a colorful dress on her bed, after looking at it she threw it down and picked up an all black dress to wear out that night. In that instant you see how, what she decides to wear portrays the character that she is, which is evil.. When she gets outside of the house it is dark, she whistles from outside for the husband to come out from his brightly lit house (where the wife is also.) The husband hears the sound and ultimately goes out to have an affair with the city woman. In the shot, the side of the room where he changes his coat is darkly lit compared to the side of the room where the wife would enter the scene; conveying the message that he is about to do something devious while the wife’s plans was to bring food in the dining area on the lit side of the room in that shot. This is when the character of the wife is introduced. When the husband is already gone the wife comes out to find that he is not there. She is the complete opposite of the city woman. She never had to touch her hair, it was neatly pulled back and the color of her hair was blonde (the opposite of dark) and she had lighter color clothes on, more rural and covered up. This simple description of the woman shows already, that there is a difference in these two women. The wife is portrayed as the innocent type (because she is) and how the country affects the way she is in contrary to the city affecting the city woman.
When the words: “they used to be like children, carefree…always happy and laughing” showed up the sequence immediately after that was the wife and the husband in a meadow with high key lighting (very bright) and exudes the happiness in which they use to share. Then when the other words “Now he ruins himself for that woman from the city- money lenders strip the farm-” the next shot is a very low light and dark. When they talked about his wife it is always high key lighting, and when they talk about the city woman the lighting is all low key lighting.

Blog 12-report out

YES!!!! I think I found my hook. I found a lot of information that is strengthening my argument and I also got something written down. The bits and pieces of ideas that I wrote down the other day is actually coming together. I am seeing a structure of a paper forming and I am happy!

Anybody that is taking the side of TV not being to reason violence is rising maybe we can exchange ideas if you guys are having problems. other than that, research is coming along nicely as well as my writing.

Blog 11- Down to Business

So it looks like my introduction is not going to get written just yet, but I do have some relatively GREAT news. At first when I had my claim I was a little shaking on how I was going to back it up because there was a lot of evidence in the favor of TV being the influence of violence. But as I brainstormed ideas and researched them at the same time I realized that there were just as many reasons to support my claim. So basically instead of making a complete structure of my introduction I jotted down some notes to help me format the reasons why I am right. That was way off from, my idea of getting my intro completed. I feel a lot better that I have more arguments to follow up on and prove my claim to be correct. I came to class with an outline but my only worry is if the things I outlined are completely relevant to the whole idea. I think the only way to complete know that is to do a draft, so that means a lot of writing and re-writing. I’m super hyped because of the evidence that I found and I think I am working towards a nice structured paper. The other hard part is actually getting it in ORDER. I hope this outlining process saves m life…!!!
For next class I will be really happy if I am able to have a nice structured intro, and if not the intro, I want to have my reasons and support down. I have everything jumbled in my book, and I just want to be able to see it on paper, neatly and organized.

Blog 9- preparation for the mid-term!

1)
-A Thesis statement is the sentence that basically sums up what your whole essay is going to be about. It is the argument in which you are trying to prove or the point that you are trying to make. (wisegeek.com) Ex. “Censorship in Sea Haven and in other societies promotes a lack of gratification and a search for truth.”
-When you research something, you are looking at various forms of media; books, internet, TV, magazines etc. in a sequential way in order to find ideas, prove theories, or even gain more knowledge. (dictionary.com) Ex. I looked up the meaning for question one on geekwise.com
-An argument is taking the pro or con (different view points) of a particular subject and stating the facts that prove your side to be true. (dictionary.com) Ex. Bones need vitamin D and Calcium. Milk is good for the bones because, there is vitamin D and Calcium in milk.
-A claim is something that is alleged and meant to be true, but it is not certain. Ex. Lady Gaga was a man.
-A reason is a statement that can be given to explain why something is the way it is. Ex. I was late to class because I missed my stop and had to walk back three blocks.
-Evidence is information that increases the chances of something that is alleged to be true. The probability of the truth gets higher. (human-brain.org/evidence.html) Ex. The man killed his wife, because his finger prints were on the knife that killed her, and his wife’s blood was on his shirt and pants.

2) Louis wants us to share our opinion on the topic of media being blamed for violence in children. He wants us to look at things from a sociological stand point and research of some of the factors that might contribute to the violence in children; TV being the main source, whether the shows were violent or not. My initial opinion of the topic is that TV does have some effect on the way children are so violent but not 100 percent. I believe this because children are innocent and they get a lot of influences from their surroundings. There is a lot of evidence supporting my ideas in the new today seeing little kids fighting in the street and the parents rooting them on, as well as bringing guns and bombs to school because of what is being watched on TV. I think my first source is going to be news paper articles to get ideas of real stories that happened to compare my opinion with.

BLog 7 (Reflection)

In the last two week of class, I was able to look at a lot of things differently , than I did before. I was also able to learn lot of new things as well. First off this is my first time ever doing a blog and it is actually really fun. It is a new way of writing and responding to the things that I have watched and read. One of the major things I want to touch basis on. The movies that we watched in class weren't just me watching movies. Based on the themes of what we were learning I was able to look at the movies in a different light. I have high expectations for this class, in learning more things in different ways.

Blog 6- The Matrixxxxxx..

when you wake up in the morning do you ever thing about what your sole purpose of being here is? How do we differentiate reality and truth away from illusion and lies? Is it too late to be saved ?(what ever saved is in your eyes) In the movie "The Matrix" directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski creates a biblically symbolic notion that we are living in a fake reality for the pacification of the society and the truth has yet to be discovered. In "The Matrix", there is no room for the truth.
Reality:" the resemblance to what is real." So the question is: is what is given to you right before you eyes, necessarily real? The problem with the world today is that everything is taken for exactly what it is, with no question or research behind it. If everything in life is taken as it is, what does that mean for society? It gives authority the maxi um control over you. If I were a character in the movie, I wouldn't want to live in the Matrix. I don't want to the the result of puppetry, and be fed a lie in the life of the matrix. I would want to set apart from the whole and find the truth.
This movie has very parallel symbolism to the Bible. Neo is supposed to be the "chosen one"( the one let loose from the chain in the cave) So as he follows the white rabbit, he meets these people that help him see the truth. Morpheus which means: God of dreams, believed in Neo from day one before he even met him. Morpheus leads the way for Neo, and takes him to see Oracle, which means: giving answers from God. When he goes she tells him that he has a gift, what that he "was not" the one. I think she did that because she was only there to show the path, and allow free will to take it's course. Chyper was tired of living outside of the matrix and lured the Guards to the God of Dreams (Morpheus). He turned on everyone. The name Chyper means: secret writings or Zero. Finally, The only woman that kept everything together, came to get Neo and declared her love "the one", was Trinity which means: union of the father, the son and the holy spirit. When the Oracle said that Neo had a gift but he was waiting for something, I think what she was referring to was him believing.
Illusion:"something deceived by producing a false or misleading impression of reality." That sounds more like the life we live. An illusion. I think that we live in the matrix because we have so many messages being delivered to us, that we fail to search for the derivative of the meaning. We are presented with media, ads, and propaganda and have become slaves to cultural society's rule. Breaking free form this illusion of life will set me free to the real world. Reality.

Blog 5- Get on the ball with work

After looking over My syllabi in each class, I noticed that I have to managed my time to be able to read the chapters fully in each book for each class. for mass media and society we have to make sure assignments are in every sunday before 11pm. For english comp we have to make sure to stay uo to date on the blogs and also start working on the mid term. for the film class we have to learn and get comfortable with the terms, and do the assignment: pick a movie we've watched in class and do the work sheet, pages 18-20.

As of now for me its all about time management !!

Blog 4-Truman Syndrome

Truman syndrome is a delusional state where people feel as if they are always being watched. these people also feel like they are stuck on a reality show and that all of their movements are being monitered. Suffering from truman syndrome can occur in cultures where people are highly servalenced or where they can watch a lot of reality shows, to get the sence of what it feels like to be watched. I my opinion I think it is more of a mental mind game because I live in a society that has high access of reality shows and we are constantly servalenced whether we know it or not. Believing that you are being watched all the time can be very harmful to the people that thing that as well as their relationships with others. Some people believe that they can win money, and they do outrageous things to get the people "in on the joke's" attention. Truman Syndrome can be controlled by taking medication.
The website that I recieved my information from was http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-truman-syndrome.htm and http://www.newsweek.com/id/150492. I feel like these are pretty legit sites because I looked at other sites just as an outline and for the most part the info is the same. I just liked wisegeek because it gave me straight forward info and I liked newsweek because it gave examples of cases of the truman syndrome.

blog 3. 1984 Truman..

Imagine if everything that made up your life was a lie, to protect you from a conflict-filled “real world”. From the first step you took, the first word you’ve spoken, to the friendships you’ve built. Is the perfect society really worth living a lie? That was the question that Truman was faced with in Sea haven. Censorship in Sea Haven and in other societies promotes a lack of gratification and a search for truth.
In the movie “The Truman Show” Jim Carey (Truman) had a very parallel life to a few important concepts in literature. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the protagonist, Winston Smith is very parallel to the main character Truman, in Sea haven. They are somewhat victimized in both their societies. The director of “The Truman Show”, Christof is a mirror of “the Party” (Ingsoc).
Looking at the life from Winston’s point of view you would learn to dislike the society in which he lives; as well as watching the society in which Truman lives; so fake and sugar coated. The Ingsoc created a controlled environment, with the fear of being watched by “Big Brother” (the head of the party). This is a parallel that goes directly to Truman, throughout his whole life he was watched and didn’t know it. His whole life was made up from a lie to believe in things that were not true. A very important character in 1984 was Syme, he the Sylvia in the novel. Syme was a major threat to the party, because he refused to conform and believe what they were trying to do to the Society. In effort to save Winston from learning the truth, he was vaporized from their society. Sylvia too was kicked off of “The Truman Show” for partially revealing to Truman the truths of what was going on. When living in any society you have friends and foes. Some of those friends though, may very well be foes. A great example is Marlon, Truman’s childhood friend. There a scene in the movie where Marlon “sincerely” convinced Truman that nothing was going on. Nobody was watching him and if it was true that he would be in on it. He led Truman astray based on gaining his trust. The friend/foe character in the novel was O’Brien. Winston thought that he could confide in O’Brien, but in the end he turned out to be a part of the inner party who ended up turning Winston in.
The juxtaposition in the movie “The Truman Show” and the novel 1984 by George Orwell creates the image in my mind that the movie allows the viewers to see bigger picture and how it is connected to the world outside of New Haven. Truman’s life can then be concluded by saying all things in life are not what they seem no matter how real they may be in front of you, and the more that his life was censored the more he strived for the truth, which is when he decided to leave New Haven. Winston on the contrary, was not lucky enough to survive the suffering that came with finding out the truth. So the question then again raises… is a “what seems to be perfect” society, really worth living a lie?

Blog 2- Allegory of the Cave

“The allegory of the cave” was meant to describe a philosophers place in society, which is not view things as blatantly as they are but to look deeper into them. This myth described a group of people chained together, with their head fixed to a blank wall. This forced them to only be able to see shadows of real objects cast by a fire behind them. Now if the bound cavemen were to see the actual item of the shadows they’ve seen for their whole life, they wouldn’t take that as real nor would they recognize those items either. Furthermore if one of those cave men broke free and was forced out of the cave to discover things they’ve never seen the caveman would take that experience as torture and unreal.
After the cave man sees all of the things that he has never seen: the items that cast the shadows, the green grass outside the cave, the sun, he has the choice to go back to the cave to share his knowledge with the rest of the cavemen. If he did the response in turn would be that he is crazy and all those things were unreal. So what the myth really means is when one (philosopher) strives toward the sun (“ultimate knowledge”) then tries to liberate the others (the bound cavemen) who refuse to believe him or her, it shows how naive the cavemen are for only taking the shadows(which are fake) as real and everything else is falsely.

Getting blinded by the sun is the way to get ultimate knowledge.

I am a cyborg!

When it comes to being cyborg the first person that comes to mind is Robocop. It says it all in his name. He is part robot that is dependent on mechanics and electronics to help him get through daily trouble. I would never compare myself to him because I don’t have guns, a suit of protected armor or computerized brain. But I do use machines and electronics to get me through my everyday trials and tribulations. So the question raises in my mind am I really a cyborg?

One day I was on my way to work, I was already running late and I left my house nearly running to the train station, only to realize I didn’t have my metro card. “GREAT” I said to myself. There was nothing that I could do but go back home to get my metro card, so I could get on the train. Or there was that time I left my phone home and I felt absolutely lost and not like myself, I kept reaching into my pocket because of the infamous “phantom vibration” only to realize my blackberry was not there. Becoming a cyborg has been a gradual process that has changed from a luxury to a bear necessity in my life. In order to function in today’s society the dependency of mechanics, electronics and all that techy stuff is what I have succumb to(sadly). But really, it is not my fault. Everywhere you look, there’s a machine, an automated service or some kind of “not so luxurious” need, rather than a desire. Train stations, no longer deal with tokens, it’s the power of that magnetic strip that gets you from place to place. Or even something as simple as applying to a job has turned into an ocean of websites that I have to surf through just to find that application. Me becoming the cyborg I am is basically what good ole Charles Darwin was explaining. You must evolve and adapt to your surroundings in order to survive. I am technologically savvy because the world is becoming that way. So yes I am a cyborg, I depend on these tools: my cell phone, laptop, metro cards, etc. to get to my means, and accomplishments for today. So maybe Robocop and myself really do have something in common huh?
